An impartial and neutral independent office of the Legislative Assembly, the Alberta Ombudsman is uniquely positioned to investigate complaints related to municipalities. As Canada’s oldest parliamentary ombudsman office with nearly 50 years of experience, our office looks forward to working in a meaningful and collaborative manner with both complainants and municipalities in the future.
We have no comment on either ongoing consultations or specifics about how our office may engage with municipalities until the regulations are finalized. We will continue to consult with municipalities and other stakeholders should they have questions about how our office works under its current mandate.
However, we are working towards accepting municipal complaints by April 1, 2018 and have been engaged for some months now on planning for this new expansion of our jurisdiction.
We will continue to consult with the Alberta government to ensure our expanded mandate receives adequate supports.
